The problem extends to other countries, including South Africa and Uganda.
The report indicates that Viagra accounted for about 6.5 million unlicensed prescriptions for the country in 2021.
For South Africa, the issue of counterfeiting is becoming increasingly urgent. While the prevalence of fake Viagra is rising, many of its users are not aware of the existence of the drug.
On average, men who take Viagra for erectile dysfunction don’t have any issues getting or maintaining an erection, according to the report. But the problem has also led to concerns among some health professionals.
According to the, the number of unlicensed prescriptions for South Africa was 31.8 million in 2021, rising to 63.7 million in 2024.
For Uganda, the issue of counterfeit drugs has also increased. As the country has become more isolated from the global world in recent years, counterfeit medications have become more common.
In a to show the problem, health professionals from the University of South West London and the University of Cape Town are working together to find out whether the problem is related to counterfeit drugs.
The research was funded by the National Institute for Health Research, the University of the Burnet Medical School and the University of Cape Town.
